NIO Unveils 46105 Large Cylindrical Battery, Energy Density Sets New Record

On December 23, 2023, NIO unveiled its new 46105 large cylindrical battery at the 2023 NIO Day. The battery uses NIO’s proprietary “zero-pin” technology, achieving an energy density of 292Wh/kg, the highest in the world for mass-produced batteries.

The 46105 large cylindrical battery measures 46mm x 105mm, with a cell height of 50mm. The battery uses a number of innovative technologies, including:

  • “Zero-pin” technology: This technology integrates the positive and negative electrodes of the cell directly into the positive and negative electrode materials, thereby reducing the volume and weight of the cell.
  • High-nickel ternary positive material: This material has a higher energy density, but is also more prone to thermal runaway. NIO has adopted a number of technologies to improve battery safety, including thermal runaway protection devices and battery management systems.
  • High-strength aluminum shell: This shell has higher strength and rigidity, and can withstand higher temperatures and pressures.

The application of the 46105 large cylindrical battery will bring longer range and faster charging speeds to NIO’s vehicles. NIO claims that vehicles equipped with the 46105 large cylindrical battery will be able to achieve a range of over 700 kilometers and charge to 80% in 20 minutes.

The launch of the 46105 large cylindrical battery is another breakthrough in NIO’s battery technology. The mass production of this battery will further enhance NIO’s competitiveness in the electric vehicle market.
